Welcome to a world of Gods and Demons, a world where Behemoths and Leviathans swim among the dark currents of the oceanic depths and sing mournful songs to the moon. It is a place of water, of shifting tides, of strong currents and endless horizons. It was the beginning, once upon a time, before land masses rose up over the surface, and now the Gods have reclaimed what they had given away: there is no land in sight, no haven to set your foot upon but hand-me-downs of a lost civilization that was swallowed by the sea.
To you, the water is your mother, your lover, your life and when it is time to depart from the world, the water is your death. To the past, there is no known record of what walked the earth -- a planet of dirt. Still, old trees nestle, ancient and wise, in the holy groves built by ancient man, strung together with sea-plants and coral, their roots allowed to dip into the ocean and purify the water for drink.
But there are darker forces at work in this world of vast waters: Ancient Gods that have swallowed up the earth and reigned untouched in the waters are waking up from their deep slumber, taking note of human kind and walking among them unbeknownst. There are those who are no longer human who have been blessed (or cursed) by their touch, mutating into a closer shape to their God's truest children: fish gills slicing through the ear, fully functional, scales growing along spines, and faces, delicate bone structures, fins along the base of the neck, webbed toes, hands, and on occasion large unblinking eyes.
In a place where the sea is as often feared as it is revered, mutation, for the rest of mankind, is nothing more than death itself, and they fear it as they fear starvation, or thirst. So humans, a dying race, huddle in their mismatched towns roped together by sea-trash, float on an endless ocean, denying the existence of all Gods but those of the Earth, while quietly giving thanks to the Sea Gods for not destroying them at their whim. Humanity has dwindled to almost nothing: disjointed bands of people trying to survive in a large, lonely world that makes no sense, while the Gods are beginning to move among them, and an even older evil starts to manifest in the darkness of their dreams.
Welcome to the beginning of the end. Welcome, to Waterworld.
